Sword Woman 3

  1. SWORD WOMAN 3 - An acrylic painting on a 16 X 24 size canvas board. This is the cover of the paperback book published by Zebra Books in 1977.

The preliminary sketches that I submitted for this book were based on the characters as described in the story by Howard; wearing wide-brimmed feathered hats, pantaloons, and using fencing swords ala the Three Musketeers. But the editor was not concerned with the artwork being faithful to the story, she wanted the book to attract "Conan" readers, and insisted I make my artwork reflect Howard's barbarian age stories ala "Conan," and suggested the scene you see here. When I brought the finished painting to her office, the editor thought the sword woman's breasts were a bit too small so I took it home and made them larger. This time she said they were a bit too large. I was relieved when, with the third try the editor said, "perfect".

As I rode back home on the bus, watching the city streets go by, my thoughts turned again to Vermont and my old job at Simmonds Precision, and how much I missed all those "problems" I had to deal with in the lab, the drafting department, the assembly department, the machine shop. Geez, I was thinking of them as "the good old days!"
